A Voice for the Hispanic Community

As a UFCU employee for 21 years, Monica Andry worked to improve the financial health and education of Central Texas Latinos and her community. Now, as the newly appointed president and CEO of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, she is continuing her passion to advocate and be a voice for the Hispanic community.

“My first job after graduating from UT was supervisor of UFCU’s call center. There I was able to listen to our Members about the hiccups or barriers or confusion they were experiencing. That really helped me fine tune my listening skills and understand the business from their perspective. As I transitioned into other roles (the last five years as financial health program manager), I was able to translate that into process improvements for the Members. And through working with our Members, I realized the importance of financial health and education for our community to feel confident and stable in their financial lives.

“I also learned a lot about the needs of the Latino community, and how UFCU could help that demographic and small businesses here in Austin. Did you know that, for instance, 60% of Latino businesses get declined for capital when applying? As a financial institution committed to supporting both cultural diversity and financial health, UFCU has been able to fill that void for a population that often gets a no.

“UFCU gave me the space to explore many opportunities to serve in different capacities in the community. Now in this position as the president and CEO of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber, I am using and pulling in all of these different skills when I'm speaking to city representatives or local mayors or small businesses that are looking to connect and grow their businesses. The chamber’s vision is to create a Central Texas where Latino businesses will thrive and be impactful leaders of our community, and that is very much in line with UFCU’s vision, too. As I told one of my colleagues when I was leaving UFCU—I’m not leaving UFCU, I’m taking UFCU with me.”
