I’ve been a member since 1982, when I came to Austin for graduate school at UT. The thing I like most about it is its community feel—the sense of belonging to a group of like-minded people. I also love the personal, friendly service and the useful classes, which teach me how to be an efficient consumer and save money. After taking Wheels101, where UFCU taught me what to say and what to expect when I went to a car dealer, I saved almost $2,000 by being brave enough to walk out of the dealership when they said they could not meet my price. Just as the teacher said, they called me at home that night and caved in.
I recently refinanced my home with UFCU. I previously refinanced with a large bank, and the experience was horrible. I was a customer, not a member. So when rates went down, a friend suggested I refinance with a credit union. It had never occurred to me that UFCU could finance my home, but the process was night and day. Every step of the way was different. It was the best experience I have ever had with a financial institution.
