Mission: Success, Happiness, and Homeownership
If your goal is homeownership, persistence and fortitude come in handy. So can a community that wants you to succeed. Wherever you are on your financial journey, UFCU has your back. Veteran Jamie C appreciates this as both a Member and an employee of UFCU.
Her starting point is not unusual. After eight years in the US Army, Jamie and her husband struggled financially and emotionally, trying to find their place in the world. Jamie says, “The support network we always had in the military was gone, and for the first time in our lives, we felt alone. I was living paycheck to paycheck, paying rent with cash advances off my credit card, barely making it.”
Homeownership seemed like a distant dream. “I never thought we would get out of debt enough to be able to afford a house or get approved for one,” recalls Jamie. “Our credit score was 620. We had tried to get approved for a home loan a couple of years prior and we were declined.” But all of that changed in 2012 when she started working at UFCU. That’s where she found a supportive community that confirmed her belief that her financial situation was within her control.
Jamie began taking steps toward financial health and put into practice some of the good habits she learned about over her career in financial services. “Over time, I transferred all my high-interest debt to a significantly lower-rate credit card, which allowed us to pay off over $25,000 in credit card debt.” She also monitored her family’s auto loans and got ever-lower interest rates as they became available to her. Changes like these took time, but with patience and a supportive network of friends and colleagues, Jamie stuck to it.
As her credit improved, UFCU’s lending team helped her family buy their first house through the federal Veterans Assistance program in 2014. In 2020, the employee benefits offered by UFCU enabled them to sell their first home and purchase a new one at a reduced market rate with waived fees.
In Jamie’s role today as a Senior Financial Health Program Specialist, she assists UFCU employees as they journey through difficult times. “Now, I come to work every day and help other employees find their financial freedom just like I did. I believe it’s through the desire to help those around us that we find true success and happiness. I am grateful to be a life-long Member of UFCU and honored to work here.” She also volunteers with the veteran community.
Jamie happened to be a UFCU employee when she began working to improve her credit — and her chances of homeownership. However, she will be the first to tell you that that the steps she took are available to everyone. And that a supportive, caring community makes all the difference.
