Job Searching Tips for High School Students

Gracie Barrera, UFCU Corporate Recruiter, appeared on KXAN's Studio 512 to offer tips for teens looking for a job.

Finding your first job can be a fun and exciting process. This is a great opportunity to try out different fields and discover what you love to do. The steps below will help you get started and identify what areas to focus on.

Make a list of your interests and a list of what skills you want to learn

  • For example: If you are interested in Hotel Management, finding a job in a restaurant is an excellent way to gain hospitality experience.
  • Or if you are interested in working with children: start a babysitting business in your local neighborhood or work as a summer camp counselor.

Focus on fields of study

  • Think broad rather than specific job titles, research Industries, fields and trades
  • Interview people who are in the field in which you are interested
  • Watch videos: These are typically found on employer sites
  • Read books on those areas

Do your research about the company and submit your resume and application:

  • Review their website
  • Review their website
  • Visit their retail stores
  • Research employee reviews

Take the time to go in and speak with someone to introduce yourself.

This will make you stand out!
